Abstract
Background: Clear aligner therapy has become an increasingly visible orthodontic option because of its aesthetic and removable design. However, public knowledge of its indications, limitations and perceived advantages remains variable.
Objective: This questionnaire-based study assessed awareness, perceptions and basic knowledge of clear aligners among the general population in India.
Methods: A 15-item web-based questionnaire was distributed through Google Forms. A total of 5000 participants responded. Responses were compiled and analysed statistically, with associations assessed using the Chi-square test.
Results: Most respondents had heard about aligners before the survey, and 3560 participants reported knowing the difference between aligners and braces. Aesthetic perception was favourable, with 3680 respondents indicating that aligners provide a favourable aesthetic appearance. Oral hygiene was also viewed positively, as 3850 respondents believed that hygiene can be better maintained with aligners than with braces. However, only 680 respondents considered aligners cost-effective. Misconceptions were also evident, as 3470 respondents believed that aligners can be used for all kinds of teeth corrections. A statistically significant association was observed between prior exposure to orthodontic treatment and treatment preference (p < 0.001).
Conclusion: The findings indicate favourable public perception of clear aligners, particularly regarding aesthetics and oral hygiene, but also reveal misconceptions about cost-effectiveness, treatment scope and efficiency. Structured patient education may support more informed orthodontic decision-making.
